This is the fourth project for Shepherds Bush Housing Association. The semi-detached property originally constructed by Brown Brothers Engineering in 1934, manufacturer of aircraft parts, and the building served as their west London storage and distribution centre.
The design and detailing of the building is relatively simple and one can assume was meant to express the utilitarian nature of the building as an industrial warehouse. The proposals explore the development potential of the existing building. A viable mixed-use scheme has been identified, which introduces three additional floors to the existing building. Each of the additional floors is progressively setback from the existing second-floor roof parapet.
The lower ground and ground floor will accommodate retail and commercial space and the 1st – 5th floors will accommodate 32 two and three bedroom units. The sustainability targets for the development will be BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The proposed addition of residential units will contribute to the acute housing shortage in the borough and will allow the building to re-engage positively and enhance the surrounding urban landscape.
