The project comprises the erection and completion of a Day Centre Resource Hub consisting of a cafe/restaurant, a kitchen, reception and office, lounge, WC’s and stores at ground floor level with a multi-purpose room, pottery room, IT/internet room, assisted bathroom,treatment room, hairdressing room, laundry, staffroom and WC’s at second floor level. The accommodation also provides 13 1-bedroom dwellings on part of the first floor and on the second and third floors. The building replaces an existing care home which is to be demolished. The Harris Day Centre forms part of a larger residential care scheme (Leonora House) managed by Octavia Housing. The community centre will be converted into a supported living Dementia Hub comprising 5no. individual bedsit areas with shared communal and living spaces.

The development consisted of the refurbishment of an existing traditional care home into an Extra Care home. This type of accommodation helps to maintain the independence of older people by providing individual dwellings with fully private facilities, alongside communal services should they be required. The scheme comprises 35 one and two bedroom self-contained flats, communal dining and living areas and shared facilities, such as assisted bathrooms and laundry facilities. This is our third development for MHT using the same project team of Sandwood, Anne Thorne Architects Partnership and Dewhurst Macfarlane Consulting Engineers. The development is a four storey new build block of 17no one and two bedroom apartments for the Metropolitan Housing Trust. It is constructed in masonry, with beam and block ground floors and concrete hollowcore upper floors, with brick exterior and a “rusticated” panelled facade. The roofs consist of timber joists and a green sedum roof. The project includes the use of FSC timber wherever possible (including kitchens) and installation of a solar thermal hot water system.
