Willows Yard – Handover

SDB is pleased to announce the completion of Willows Yard Project for Origin Housing. This project consists of the construction of a five storey block of 21 flats all for affordable rent. The block consists of a four storey concrete frame with Metsec infill and brick cladding and a lightweight top storey with aluminium cladding. On of the issues on the site is the proximity of an electrical substation requiring excavation around high voltage cables and negotiation of party wall awards. During the detailed design process it became clear that the planning permission, that had been obtained prior to the purchase by Origin, could not be built as the elevations were not consistent with the plans and the […]

BRICK Awards

SDB is pleased to announce a new award for John Fisher Street (Darbishire Place) which is The Best Housing Design Award by the BRICK Awards. “Project: Darbishire Place Architect: Niall McLaughlin Architects  Specialist Brickwork Contractor: Sandwood Design and Build Brick: Wienerberger; Marzaile The building is simple, direct, without fuss, frivolity or fancy. There are however moments of architectural delight, which become apparent. The window surrounds in a subtly projecting and tapering precast architectural stone trim, bring sensitive and subtle articulation to what would otherwise be a rather banal building. Two zones of stacked corner balconies are designed with a bespoke precast tapering blade column, which accentuate the relationship of the building users to […]

Stirling Prize shortlisting

Our project at John Fisher Street (Darbishire Place) for the Peabody Trust has been short listed for the Stirling Prize. The awards report provides the following description. This is a brilliant piece of urban design. The dignified new building, with its refined proportions and details, replaces a well detailed and proportioned Peabody mansion block taken out in World War II by a V2 bomb, along with another block whose footprint now provides a garden at the heart of the newly completed courtyard still graced by the remaining three Edwardian blocks. A casual comparison of the old and new elevations reveals the subtlety of the new architecture. The use of materials […]

2015 Housing Design Awards

Two of our recent project have been shortlisted for the 2015 Housing Design Awards. Darbishire Place (John Fisher Street) for Peabody Trust with Niall McLaughlin Architects and 1-6 Copper Lane (Springdale Road) for a co-housing group Springdale Gardens Ltd. With Henley Halebrown Rorrison Architects. There are a total of 22 completed schemes short listed nationally, so our two schemes represent nearly 10% of that total.

2015 RIBA Awards

SDB is pleased to announce that two of its projects were shortlisted for the RIBA London Regional awards. This was out of a total shortlist across London of 68 projects. Although Copper Lane did not make it through to a Regional Award Darbishire Place was successful and is now automatically put forward to the National Awards shortlist. This is the second project SDB has undertaken for Niall Mclaughlin architects, the first Evelyn Road in Silvertown was also a Regional and National RIBA award winner. Both projects were for the Peabody Trust.
